What Do Career Counselors Do?

Career counselors are professionals who help their clients determine the perfect career for them with methods like aptitude assessments, career transitions, and the confidence to overcome challenges. A career counselor usually deals with high school students or college students to fixate their career objectives and help them develop the suitable skills that they would require to excel in their careers. They provide all the tools and resources you need to reach closer to your aim. The point of career counseling is to find purpose in your life and figure out ways and means to attain that purpose. Following is a list of things that career counselors are responsible for doing when they are consulted.

  • Assisting the client in recognising the factors that are responsible for the career development and providing them with tools and resources for their individual growth and development that is directly proportional to their careers.
  • Analyzing and evaluating the results of aptitude assessments and other testing methods to help recognise suitable careers and help prepare for them.
  • Guiding clients in setting realistic goals and planning out ways to achieve those goals in an organized manner, and to ensure success.
  • Counseling clients throughout the entire process of them finding the most appropriate career for themselves and providing them with all the necessary support that they might require for the same.
  • Organizing one-to-one and group career counseling sessions to cater to the career needs of students with similar skills and interests. These sessions also provide the scope of networking and forming new connections with like-minded people that might turn out to be helpful for the clients in the long run.
  • Fulfilling the academic, as well as the emotional needs of a client because looking for the suitable career is often related to immense stress and anxiety. Emotional support is one of the most important things that career counselors should provide students with.

If you want to become a successful career counselor, you would not only require professional degrees but work experience also plays a  major role. If you don’t have real world working experiences, your degrees and accolades would be of no value. Moreover, you would have to update or renew your certification or license every two to three years if you want to keep practicing as a career counselor. Being able to communicate well is a great skill that would turn out to be a blessing in a job like career counseling. If you are not able to communicate well with your client, your client wouldn’t be able to connect with you and share their difficulties with you. You would be able to provide emotional support to your client only if you have the adequate communication skills.

How Is Career Counseling Helpful?

Career Counseling Session

Career Counseling has gained a lot of goodwill among individuals because of its effectiveness in guiding them towards a bright and successful future. Career counselors not only provide assistance in excelling in your career but they also study and analyse your skills and interests to help you choose the perfect career for yourself. If you’re confused about what to pursue, you should certainly visit a trained career counselor who would be able to guide you well. You would first be given a couple of questionaires. These would help the counselor determine things that you’re passionate about. Based on this study, you’ll be suggested a few career options that might work for you. Finally, you’ll be aware of all the steps you need to take to reach your goal, the best suited career for you that goes well with your skills and your future aspirations. Let’s talk about some benefits of career counseling.

  • Knowing Your Skills

There are people who are aware of their skills but are unable to decide on the right career while on the other hand, there are some who are confused about the things they’re good at. Career counseling acts as a blessing for them. Once you opt for it, you’d be made to appear for several skill assessment tests and interviews that are meant for analysing the areas that interest you. You’ll be surprised to know about skills that you had no idea you possessed. In this way, you’ll acquire clarity about yourself and your qualities.

  • Setting Goals

To be able to achieve a goal, you need to set one first. If you don’t have a fixed destination, you can’t begin the journey. Career counseling would help you determine your goals and set a fixed path towards achieving them. Your goals need to be practical and realistic. Moreover, you would also be instructed to keep a track of your progress while you move forward with your plan.

  • Exploring Options

A career counselor would tell you about multiple career options that would suit you. This has a motive. It would enable you to explore a wide plethora of job opportunities and figure out your suitable job based on your financial requirements, personal values, etc. Finalising on a career involves a lot of exploration since it’s associated with how you would shape your future. Thus, you should always keep an eye on related fields instead of sticking to one single portfolio. In the process, you’re going to discover new things about yourself that would help you in your future endeavors.
